Advance Australia Fair - Australian National Anthem

Advance Australia Fair PosterAdvance Australia Fair was composed by Peter Dodds McCormick in the late 19th century. It was sung as a patriotic song after being performed for the first time at a Highland Society function in Sydney on 30 November 1878. On 1 January 1901, an amended version was sung by a choir of 10,000 at the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia.

During World War II Advance Australia Fair became more than just another patriotic song. Movie theatres started to play it at the end of the war documentaries following God Save the Queen and The Star Spangled Banner (the USA Anthem), and its first official recording was for a commercial about the Australian troops arriving in Egypt on their way to Gallipoli in 1916.

Over the years that followed it continued to be sung at the beginning or end of official and unofficial functions. After many official and non-official polls and competitions, an Official National Poll was finally held in May 1977. Over 7 million people were issued with ballot papers and the results were:

43.2% Advance Australia Fair
28.3%  Waltzing Matilda
18.7%  God Save the Queen
9.6%  Song of Australia

On 19 April 1984, Sir Ninian Stevens, Governor-General of Australia issued the following Proclomation:
